Name Professor Class Date Stem cell research and cures Stems cells are cells that have the ability to differentiate into specific ones. They divide through mitosis and can only be found in organisms that are multicellular. Mammals have two types off stem cells: embryonic stem cells which are obtained from the internal cell mass of blastocysts and adult stem cells which are located in different tissues. In adult organisms, progenitor cells and stem cells function as the repair system of the body which regenerates into fully grown tissues. Due to the ability of stems cells to regenerate and replenish other cells, they can be used in stem cell research and cure (Lim, 2006). There are three sources of adult cells in humans: bone marrow whereby extraction is done by drilling into the bone mainly the femur followed by harvesting of the bone marrow, adipose tissue where extraction is done by a process called liposuction. Lastly is blood can also provide stem cells and the extraction is done through apheresis where b lood is drawn from a donor and passed through a machine which extracts only the stem cells and returns other blood components to the donor (Marzilli, 2007). Stem cells can cure diseases because they possess two important features which the other cells of the body lack. In some cases regeneration happens after a long time when they are inactive state.
